Rafael Z. Frantz
I am a Professor of Computing at UNIJUÍ University (Brazil), where I teach across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and supervise a wide range of MSc and PhD students in the Postgraduate Programme in Mathematical and Computational Modelling. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to guide many students who now contribute to academia, industry, and public‑sector innovation. I hold a PhD in Technology and Software Engineering from the University of Seville, Spain, where I developed my expertise in enterprise systems, interoperability and application integration. I returned to that European university in 2017 to undertake postdoctoral research with support from the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (Capes).
Before joining academia, I worked as a software development consultant in the Brazilian industrial sector for four years, contributing to the design of complex, mission‑oriented systems, and also delivering technical training sessions on Java technology. I also co-founded a Spanish start‑up focused on enterprise systems integration, an experience that strengthened my understanding of innovation, technology transfer, and the development of scalable digital solutions. My academic work includes an extensive collection of publications in national and international journals and conferences.
My research interests span decentralised technologies including blockchain, smart contracts, data, and system integration, as well as supporting language and tools to design and run integration solutions, decentralised digital identity, and secure data infrastructures. A central focus of my work is the creation of resilient, privacy‑preserving, and sustainable digital ecosystems, particularly those supporting smart city environments.
My research trajectory is strongly shaped by long‑standing international collaboration, built over nearly two decades of continuous joint work with institutions in the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Colombia, and Brazil. These partnerships have been fundamental to my scientific development, enabling shared projects, co‑authored publications, academic mobility, and the integration of multidisciplinary and cultural perspectives. This sustained global engagement is a defining element of my career and continues to guide the direction, relevance, and impact of my research.
I am also a member of the Centre for ReDecentralisation (CRDC) at the University of Cambridge, where I contribute to research on new technological primitives for decentralised systems and to discussions on their broader societal implications. CRDC’s mission to strengthen digital autonomy and empower communities aligns closely with my interest in building fair, human‑centred digital infrastructures.
At UNIJUÍ, I lead the Applied Computing Research Group (GCA), where we develop software engineering and user-centric solutions with real‑world impact. My current research agenda advances integration and interoperability, secure data processing and sharing, and decentralised identity systems to support the next generation of sustainable smart city infrastructures.
